Architectural Importance
The house is an
interesting example of its type, designed in the Gothic style as a series of separate architectural components, distinguished
from each other by different detailing and elevation treatments to give the appearance
of accretion over time, although in reality it seem to have been designed and constructed all at once. The lodge and stable
block share the same architectural style.
The Grove as a
whole is clearly an important and integral part of the local neighbourhood and townscape, representing an unusual and interesting
example of a wealthy family residence intimately bound up with the community
surrounding it, rather than set separately aside as is perhaps more usual. This represents a significant part of the social
history of Nelson which should be recognised. The ensemble of house, outbuildings and grounds form a unified whole
which is of greater
cultural value than the sum of its parts.
As note above
Spring Bank Cottage is of value as a complete ensemble, and can hopefully be found uses which enable it to play once again
a valuable part in the life of the local community. Madina Masjid believes it can provide such a use. In particular, the gardens
have the potential to be a real asset to the area, and it is hoped that they can be restored for public use alongside the
main house and outbuildings.
